A Journey through Ledger Art

We welcome the indigenous artistry of GoodWarrior Mah’Hi’Vists Deer. A descendant of the Southern and Northern Cheyenne, Northern Arapaho, Kiowa, Sauk, Ioway, and Lenape Peoples, GoodWarrior’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in his rich cultural heritage. As a member of the Southern Cheyenne Hota’meta’naneo (Dog Soldier) Society, his connection to tradition and storytelling runs deep.

GoodWarrior’s artistic odyssey began at the age of 14 when he first delved into the captivating realm of Ledger Art. For him, the old ledger books weren’t just pages of history; they were portals to ancestral narratives, tales of battles, and sacred ceremonies. Immersed in the stories passed down through generations on both sides of his family, GoodWarrior found himself drawn to the art form’s power to preserve and share his people’s cultural legacy.

Ledger Art, with its distinctive blend of historical narrative and artistic expression, became GoodWarrior’s canvas for storytelling. Through meticulous strokes, he breathed life into scenes of battle, ceremony, and everyday life, capturing the essence of his heritage with each stroke of his pen. But GoodWarrior’s creative journey didn’t stop there. Alongside his mastery of Ledger Art, he found a passion for Regalia making and Reenactment, further immersing himself in the traditions of his ancestors.

The show’s opening on May 9th at 7 pm will be accompanied by a captivating talk by the artist himself, providing a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the inspiration behind his remarkable creations. Join us as we celebrate the artistry and cultural legacy of GoodWarrior Mah’Hi’Vists Deer, whose work transcends boundaries and speaks to the enduring spirit of indigenous peoples everywhere.
