Where I Live

Artist Bio

Terence Koehn is a Kansas native and self-taught landscape artist from WaKeeney, in the heart of Trego County. Drawing on memories from his life—camping, hunting, and spending time with friends and family—Koehn is deeply connected to the land he paints. His work is a personal reflection of his experiences in the open spaces of Kansas, particularly the areas of Trego County that have been a part of his life’s journey.
Koehn works primarily in oil on masonite or canvas, using both studio techniques and plein air painting to capture the ever-changing landscape. “I am completely enamored with its open spaces, empty places, and endless horizons,” Koehn reflects. “I find boundless solitude in this emptiness and loneliness, only then can I paint by myself, alone—it is beautiful.” His paintings reflect a love for the stark beauty of rural Kansas, with a focus on the places often overlooked—where neglect, overgrowth, and deep contrasts in color create compelling compositions. Inspired by the work of Andrew Wyeth, Koehn admires the ability to paint with honesty and simplicity, capturing both the rawness and beauty in the world around him.
Throughout his career, Koehn has exhibited his work at several galleries and events, including Signs of Life in Lawrence, Beauchamp’s in Topeka, Madd Matter in Hays, Elk Dreamer Gallery in WaKeeney, and various local art walks. The COVID lockdown gave Koehn the opportunity to focus deeply on his craft, producing a significant body of work while finding solitude in painting. During this time, he also explored plein air painting, creating pieces that brought him even closer to nature.
Koehn’s landscapes invite viewers to step into the Kansas countryside, offering a moment of reflection on the places that hold meaning and the quiet beauty of the everyday world.
